BURNING HEART
A PORTRAIT OF THE PHILIPPINES
Accompanying a medical airlift sponsored by Operation USA and the Hospital Council of Southern California, Marissa Roth first went to The Philippines in March of 1987. What was supposed to be a one-week stay turned into a ten-year personal pas de deux with this vast archipelago. She lived there for a year from 1987 – 1988 and after moving back to Los Angeles, continued to return regularly in order to work on an extended personal photographic project. This became her first book, Burning Heart: A Portrait of The Philippines, which was published by Rizzoli in 1999.
