ICELAND POPPIES
Nature unabashedly exhibits ways to awe us with sublime beauty. I imagine these poppies in their natural environment in subpolar regions of Asia and North America, and the mountains of Central Asia, emerging from snowy winters, delicate as a butterfly’s wing, silent as a rainbow. ~~ Marissa Roth
For the past few years, Marissa Roth whimsically photographed Iceland Poppies with her mobile phone. In 2025, she decided to turn her gaze towards them using a traditional camera while thinking about them in a different way. She sees this collection of images as portraits, where each poppy reveals a variety of attributes evoking their individuality, including genetic color glitches and natural bruises. She chose to photograph them simply, with ‘Rembrandt light’, from a north-facing window.
